Employers must report wages, tips, and other forms of compensation paid to employees throughout the year. This is done by filing the correct forms. There are several major dates on the calendar when it comes to employers filing taxes:
- Jan. 31: Deadline for filing Forms 940, 943, 944, 945, and Form W-2, which is the Wage and Tax Statement.
- Feb. 28: Deadline for filing Copy A of all paper 1099 Forms and Form 1096, Copy A of all paper Forms W-2 and W-3, and Form 8027.
- March 31: Deadline for filing electronic Forms 1099 and 8027 with the IRS and Form W-2 with the Social Security Administration (SSA).
- April 30, July 31, Oct. 31, and Jan. 31: Deadlines for filing Form 941, which is the quarterly federal tax return form for employers.
